Abstract:

Jake earns pocket money by helping Mum with the gardening, but one day he is dismayed to find a baby bird that has fallen out of its nest. This easy-to-read picture book, with its imaginative talking garden gnome, George, is designed to encourage children to respect and protect wildlife.

Jake and his sister Marny can’t identify the bird and are unsure how to rescue it, so they call on their trusted advisor, George. He recognises that the bird is a pale-headed rosella and suggests that they could make it a new nest. The children name their new feathered friend Chirpy, gently place it in the nest and ask Mum to help them relocate it in the tree. From a safe distance, they watch the mother rosella bring food to her baby. Compton’s soft pastel illustrations reflect the tender sentiment of the storyline. The book concludes with five simple comprehension questions which reinforce the main facts. Photos of Australian birds, accompanied by descriptions of appearance and habitat, inform the reader. Information about wildlife care groups is provided and suggestions about how to react in a similar situation are given.
